CHAPTER SIXTEEN

What the hell was wrong with him? Fuck! He'd killed over a dozen women in the last few years, yet he hadn't been able to finish her off.

It was her eyes. That had to be it! She'd stared at him, crying but not screeching like the bitches always do. Maybe he didn't get worked up as much as he usually does because she didn't go ape-shit on him.

Who the hell was he kidding? He knew why he hadn't finished her off. There's something special about Claire. He might even love her. And that, he scolded himself, is why he should never, ever come to know his victims before he kills them. Lesson learned, asshole! Fuck! This could ruin everything! She had seen his eyes. What if she told the police who she thought he might be?

This was not good! Not good at all! A serial killer falling for his prey? Could it get any worse? He thought himself smarter than that. He had made a serious rookie mistake that could cost him! At least he'd been wearing a ski mask, so she'd have a hard time identifying him, right?

A little voice in his head whispered that yes, in fact it had gotten much worse. "Shut up!" he yelled. He knew what that little voice was trying to say, but he refused to hear it.

"So fucking what?" he screamed. "It happens to everyone at one time or another." He threw the glass of milk he clutched in his hand. It crashed onto the counter, spilling milk everywhere.

"Fuck." Now he had this mess to clean up. Might as well get to it. He had to get back to the Lodge before the Sheriff got back from the hospital. It would be unwise to attract any undue attention. He had to be convincing in his role of concerned citizen wanting to lend a hand.

Dragging himself from his rickety kitchen chair, he found an old rag and proceeded to clean up his mess.
